- A new defense is being proposed in the Iraqi trial of Saddam
Hussein. The former president's legal counsel is preparing to put
forth a shattering defense: the man on trial is not Saddam
Hussein, but one of the many doubles that Hussein used to protect
himself from assassination attempts. "Our main contention is that
the real Saddam Hussein was killed shortly after his widely
reported capture and that the United States military, to protect
itself from more charges of prisoner abuse scandals, has coerced
this man, Anwar Assinam, to complete his roll as the former
president of Iraq," stated Idan Hundent, legal counsel for the
defense. "Further, we also will contend in open court that the DNA
tests used to confirm the identity of the prisoner were obtained
from the corpse of Hussein and not the man now in custody." There
has been no response from the America military, citing the fact
that "the people of Iraq are now in charge of their own country,
their own courts and their own destiny."
